South Asian Heritage Month 2026 celebrates the theme Unity in Diversity, inviting us to explore what unites us across our differences: shared values, intertwined histories, and a common commitment to community and belonging, while celebrating the beauty and strength that diversity brings. This year’s artwork captures that message through the national flowers of the eight South Asian nations, a shared garden of heritage where each bloom stands for both individuality and unity.
To mark the month, our Project Worker, Shri answers some questions about this year’s theme and sexual health.
What does unity in diversity mean to you?
To me, unity in diversity means recognising that every person brings unique experiences, cultures, beliefs, and perspectives, and that these differences make us stronger when we work together with respect and understanding. It’s about creating an environment where everyone feels valued, heard, and included, regardless of their background.
How do you think having a diverse team strengthens our sexual health service?
A diverse team helps us better understand and connect with the communities we serve. Different languages, cultures, and lived experiences allow us to provide more compassionate, culturally sensitive, and accessible care. It builds trust with patients, encourages open conversations about sexual health, and helps ensure that everyone feels respected and supported.
If you could share one thing about our sexual health services to Leicester’s South Asian community, what would it be?
I would want the South Asian community to know that our sexual health services are confidential, non-judgemental, and here for everyone. Whether you need advice, testing, contraception, or support, you will be treated with dignity and respect. Looking after your sexual health is an important part of your overall wellbeing, and there’s no shame in seeking help or asking questions.
